A journey to disaster

Some thoughts on the survival of mankind

Is mankind at journey's end?

Humanity is on a train travelling fast towards a cliff face.

There is no driver, just people piling coal into the furnace and the train accelerates.

The train is full and everyone on board is headed in the same direction; there is no option.

The restaurant car is full of rich coal brokers spending their money on a diminishing supply of luxuries; that is the limit of their interest.

The train accelerates towards the cliff face.

A few know part of the problem, enough to understand the dangers to themselves, and are devising clever ways to leave the train discreetly, by parachute, AI and osmosis.

Many know precisely what the problem is and how to stop the train at Nature’s Halt, well before the cliff face, but they need everyone to agree.  But their voices are lost in the confused uproar of ignorance, self-interest, uninterest and disinterest.

Committees have been formed and which conclude there is a problem; some of them agree to see if they can reduce the speed of the train and will report back at the next meeting… if the coal brokers agree.

In the meantime the train gathers speed, and the cliff face waits impassively.
